Day 12 – Echo…Echo…Echo…

Corin keeps gaining weight well, and is currently at 6 pounds, 5.5 oz. He is able to have such good weight gains because he is going a very good job taking to the breast feeding. We had our most successful breast feeding to date this evening, followed by our first official burping session. The first picture is from when he was being burped, which is why he looks a little strange. We still supplement after the breast feedings with a little bit of tube feedings, but we are about to move away from that. The nurses think that it is a good time to move to bottle feedings to supplement breast feedings. So once we confirm that he responds well to that, we hope to get that feeding tube out of there.

We also had the echo-cardiogram today. That took about 45 minutes, and he did a great job. Just like an ultrasound, they put some jelly on his chest and examine his heart on the screen. The people that took the echo are not the same people that read the results. It seems like we are going to have to wait until tomorrow to get the results. The nurses told us that usually means good news, since if there was a problem the doctors would call over right away. With no bad news to pass along, they don’t always feel the urgency to call over with the results. But as I posted yesterday, heart murmurs are SUPER common with babies. Many of them just go away. Some of them never go away but never cause any problems. They didn’t anticipate that this one would be a problem, they just wanted to have it checked out since he was already in the hospital.

The NICU population is in constant flux, with babies leaving everyday and new babies coming in. We are always happy for the other families when they get to take their little guys or gals home, we just very much look forward to the day when it is us taking Corin home. The finish line is coming into view though. It appears that all other issues are fading away (including his eye gunk issue – the drops are clearing that right up) and drinking his milk is the last hurdle to clear.
